Character Background: Margaret Van Fleet is an amateur archaeologist and intelligencer from Lynn, Massachusetts. The descendant of the pirate Matthijs Van Fleet, Margaret's family has been in Massachusetts since 1666 and were once  known as shipping moguls and ship owners, but have since become scholars and explorers. A graduate of Miskatonic University, Margaret spends her days travelling the worlds of the Solar System, finding and mapping ruins and seeking artifacts and ancient texts to add to the famed Van Fleet Collection, begun by her infamous ancestor Kapitein Van Fleet after raids in South America.

Margaret is a gentle soul by inclination, but ruthless in the pursuit of her goals. Margaret has been known to take things that don't belong to her from archives, libraries and grave sites, and has been known to work for both British Intelligence and the Pinkertons, among others, forwarding the interests of the United States, academia, and satisfying her own curiosity and sense of adventure.

Margaret's best friend is Rose Worthington, and she almost always travels with her Lady's Maid, Jenny.
